Passports from beyond the EU

Students and researchers at the URV: NIE, certificate or TIE

Two things decide which document is yours, your passport and how long you stay: European students staying past three months register on the EX-18, shorter exchanges can ask for a NIE certificate on the EX-15, and students from outside the EU arrive on a student visa, then give fingerprints for a TIE. The Universitat Rovira i Virgili, with campuses in Tarragona, Reus and other towns of the province, runs an International Center that helps incoming students and staff with the NIE.

Sorted by passport

  • European students staying past three months register on the EX-18 with enrolment, health cover and sufficient means
  • Shorter exchanges can use an EX-15 when a bank, landlord or faculty wants a NIE certificate
  • Students from outside the EU come in on a student visa, then book fingerprints for the TIE

Support from the university

On Avinguda Països Catalans in Tarragona, the URV International Center (I-Center) helps incoming students and staff apply for the NIE and explains registration for stays beyond three months. Its first instruction is to email hosting@urv.cat.

Once your address in Tarragona is settled, the padró is done at an OMAC of the Ajuntament; a room in Reus or another town registers at that town’s own ajuntament.

Researchers and new staff

Visiting researchers and new staff split the same way: European nationals register on the EX-18, and everyone else holds the authorisation tied to the contract or research stay before booking the fingerprint sitting. Very often a hosting letter from the department is what binds the file together.

Queries on this procedure

Is the padró relevant for students?

Often, yes: local procedures ask for it, so once your address is stable a visit to an OMAC is time well spent.

Will the I-Center book the police appointment for me?

It guides your application and the steps; the slot itself is booked on the cita previa system, and we can hunt for one with you.

My room is in Reus. Which station?

The Reus station, on Carrer General Moragues: Reus belongs to the Baix Camp, which the Delegación del Gobierno assigns there. An address inside Tarragona means Plaça d’Orleans.

One file, the right station, a date

We prepare the paperwork with you and look for the appointment at the station your comarca points to.
