Matching the request to the contract
Length decides. Three months or less: the EX-15 produces a non-resident NIE certificate. A longer season: European workers register as residents on the EX-18, and the green certificate shows the number.
Staff from outside the EU are on another track entirely, where a work authorisation has to come first and the NIE arrives with it.
What HR will ask you for
- The NIE, on its certificate or green card
- A Social Security number, which is not the NIE and comes from the Social Security administration
- A Spanish account for wages, opened against your NIE
- Occasionally a padró certificate, when you rent locally
Booking ahead of the first shift
On this coast many contracts start within the same few spring weeks. Search the online cita previa the day the offer is signed, for the station of your comarca, and slip the employer’s letter into the file: the season will not open without a number.
Queries on this procedure
Could I start before my appointment?
Registering you with Social Security requires the number, so in practice it comes first. Tell HR your appointment date when you sign.
Last summer I worked here. Is a fresh NIE needed?
It is not: last year’s number is still yours. A recent certificate may be requested by the employer, and staying past three months now means registering.
Can I apply in Salou or Cambrils?
Neither town has a station for this. The Policía Nacional directory lists Tarragona, Reus and Tortosa only, and by comarca, according to the Delegación del Gobierno, Salou belongs to Plaça d’Orleans and Cambrils, in the Baix Camp, to Reus.
