Before the season: papers in the right order

A contract with a hotel, a campsite or a park on the Costa Daurada sets off a short chain of steps. Taken in order, it is done before the first shift.

Each spring the coast from Torredembarra to Cambrils fills with new staff for the hotels, campsites and theme parks, and each spring a few start late because one paper sat waiting for another. The chain is short; its order is what matters.

The number comes first. A European worker on a contract of three months or less asks for a NIE certificate on the EX-15; on a longer contract, the EX-18 registers you as resident and the green certificate shows the number. Workers from outside the EU need a work authorisation before anything else.

Then the fee and the date. The Modelo 790 código 012 goes under the heading of your procedure and is paid at a bank, and the cita previa is booked at the station of your comarca: Plaça d’Orleans for Salou and Vila-seca, Reus for Cambrils, according to the Delegación del Gobierno.

Next, what the employer does with your number, namely Social Security registration and payroll. Your Social Security number is a separate figure, issued by the Social Security administration.

Last, the local errands: a bank account for wages and, when renting, the padró at your town hall. Tarragona city handles it at its OMAC offices; Salou, Cambrils and the other towns register residents at their own ajuntament.
