- European citizens: a Spanish-issued residence card, or the green registration certificate shown with a valid passport or ID card
- Non-EU citizens: a valid Spanish-issued NIE document together with a passport in force
- Children: a birth certificate or the libro de familia, plus their DNI, NIE or passport (compulsory from 14)
- Owners: the deed or purchase contract, a nota simple from the Land Registry, or a check of ownership in municipal records
- Tenants: the current lease for your habitual home and the latest rent receipt
- Joining an address where others are registered: the Ajuntament’s authorisation form, signed by the owner or the registered tenant
Renewal
An entry on the padró has no end date, with one exception: non-EU citizens without permanent residence renew it every two years. Anyone over 16 living in Tarragona may register whenever they like, all year round.

Queries on this guide
Padró, padrón: any difference?
None. Padró is Catalan and padrón Spanish; empadronament, or empadronamiento, is the act of joining it.
Is a NIE needed to register?
In practice, yes. The Ajuntament’s list asks non-EU citizens for a valid Spanish-issued NIE document with their passport, and Europeans for their residence card or green certificate with a passport or ID card.
Who else helps newcomers in the city?
The Ajuntament’s UTIC, Carrer Nou de Santa Tecla 9, holds reception interviews and sessions on Catalan society and work, and issues municipal reports for arraigo social, family reunification housing and integration effort at renewal. It opens 9:00–14:00 on weekdays (977 191 635, utic@tarragona.cat).
